Is SharePoint and OneDrive the Same Thing?


OneDrive:-

OneDrive is an online document/file storage platform. It is typically used by individuals and sales teams who need a central location to store and access files. OneDrive's versioning and sharing features make collaboration easier, so it's more than just an online workbook. Microsoft distinguishes between personal and professional versions of the tool; For the purposes of this article, we will focus on the commercial version.

Included in Office 365 Business Plans
SharePoint Workspace 2010, before that Groove 2007
Often considered or called "storage place"
Can be considered the cloud version of the My Documents folder on your work computer
Manage files/data with metadata and versions
Access from the browser or local folder or application based on user preferences
The OneDrive for Business sync app is used to sync OneDrive for Business files to a folder on the local computer
All downloads are private by default until you decide to share
Users connect to their own OneDrive for Business accounts, without a shared interface
The best place to download private working documents that only you want to see, or a document that has a limited scope or life cycle (for example, a document that you share only once)

SharePoint:-

SharePoint is a collaboration tool for companies that need multiple people and teams to work on documents and products at the same time. Over the past two years, Microsoft has released updates to its Office 365 product that have integrated SharePoint with the Office 365 cloud platform. Therefore, for the purposes of this post, we will be specifically talking about SharePoint as a solution for the site. If we're talking about hybrid or cloud solutions, we'll call them Office 365.

Available as a stand-alone service, but no consumer version exists
The SharePoint cloud version of the SharePoint service from Office XP
Core architecture based on (or "powered behind the scenes" by) SharePoint
Often considered or called a "team site"
Can be considered an internal site and/or an alternative file server
Manage files/data with metadata and versions
Generally accessible from a browser to use all features, but files can be accessed from the local folder
The OneDrive for Business sync application is used to synchronize SharePoint files to a folder on the local computer (separate from the OneDrive for Business folder)
Uploads default inherit permissions from the directory/folder in which they are uploaded
Users can access SharePoint as a branded, administrator-managed corporate page that serves as a dashboard with news, calendar, and more.
The best place to upload team files and/or documents for collaboration and/or use archiving workflows and permissions.

So, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online: Not exactly the same, but not quite different.

SharePoint and OneDrive have Real and perceptible differences will come from how your workplace or department will decide to use SharePoint. Organizations use SharePoint for project management sites, human resource portals, and more. OneDrive for Business uses SharePoint technology but is better for storage and single sharing.
