DevOps with
GCP: Setting up a Virtual Machine with Linux OS
Setting
up a virtual machine (VM) with a Linux operating system involves several steps.
In this guide, I'll walk you through setting up a Linux VM using Oracle
VirtualBox, a popular free virtualization software. Here's a general overview
of the process:
Download Required Software:
Oracle
VirtualBox: Download and install VirtualBox from the official website (https://www.virtualbox.org/).
Linux
ISO: Download a Linux distribution ISO file (e.g., Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian) from
the official website of the distribution you want to use.
Install VirtualBox: - Google Cloud Platform Training Hyderabad
Create a New Virtual Machine: Open VirtualBox.
Click
on the "New" button to create a new VM.
Provide
a name for your VM (e.g., "LinuxVM").
Select
the type of Linux distribution you're installing (e.g., Ubuntu 64-bit).
Allocate
memory (RAM) for your VM (at least 1GB or more depending on your needs). - GCP

Create
a virtual hard disk. The default settings are usually fine.
Configure VM Settings:
Select your VM in the VirtualBox Manager and click on "Settings."
Under
the "System" tab, make sure the boot order includes the
"Optical" drive (CD/DVD) before the "Hard Disk."
Under
the "Storage" tab, select the "Controller: IDE" and click
on the CD/DVD icon. Choose the "Choose a disk file" option and browse
to the Linux ISO you downloaded.

Install Linux: Start the VM by clicking the "Start"
button in VirtualBox.
The
VM will boot from the Linux ISO you provided.
Follow
the on-screen instructions to install Linux. You'll be asked to choose your
language, time zone, keyboard layout, and create a user account.
Install Guest Additions (Optional): After
Linux is installed, you can enhance the VM's functionality by installing
VirtualBox Guest Additions. This step is optional but recommended. - GCP

In
the running VM window, go to the "Devices" menu and select
"Insert Guest Additions CD image." Follow the on-screen instructions
to install the Guest Additions.
Configure Linux: After the installation is complete, you can
customize your Linux system according to your needs. This includes installing
software, configuring network settings, and setting up additional users.
Snapshot (Optional): It's a good idea to create a snapshot of your
VM at this point. Snapshots allow you to revert to a specific state of the VM
if something goes wrong or if you want to experiment without consequences.
Use and Manage Your VM: You can start and stop your VM from the
VirtualBox Manager.
You
can also adjust VM settings, such as CPU and memory allocation, by
right-clicking the VM and selecting "Settings." -
That's
it! You've successfully set up a virtual machine with a Linux operating system
using Oracle VirtualBox. -GCP
